If you’re keen to learn more about Colombian life, but want to get under the skin of what’s really going on, then check out the arepa.
It’s a Medellin-based English magazine which describes itself as covering the ‘cool, independent, sub-culturey side’ of the city. If you’re any good at writing they are also looking for people to provide good music, art and fashion content.
One of the best bits is that if you’re not in Medellin you can print off the entire magazine, including old editions, and have a read (of course, it would be much more eco-friendly to just read online).
The June/July edition (#8) covers entrepreneurs in the city and the story behind Medellin salsa, and female hip hop, as well as the music, art, fashion in the city. There’s a really creative front cover which puts a modern slant on a traditional Colombian painting.
There’s also a radio show which director Robin Finley and Jeff broadcast from the University of Antioquia. If you like what you see and read, and fancy a trip to Medellin, then there’s also a travel guide with some recommendations for places to stay.
We’re looking forward to August’s edition to be published.
